Rolling code, what exactly are we talking about?
By rotating code, we refer to a secure communication mechanism, which is integrated in most radio control system, and more precisely in garage, car, gate, etc. Thanks to this mechanism, the key exchanged between the remote control and the receiver varies with each action requested. Unlike a fixed code remote control, which always emits the same binary code, the variable code remote control therefore emits a different code each time the buttons are pressed. The code is obviously established by an algorithm of the manufacturer. Thanks to a signal decryption device, the receiver can interact with the remote control.
 
The use of a rotating code remote control ensures greater safety. Indeed, without knowing the mechanisms used to generate this exchanged key, an intruder cannot enter your house even if he uses a code taken with a radio sniffer.
 
How does it actually work?
The mechanism of technology is not complicated. The transmitter and receiver each have an identical code of 40 bits or 64 bits or more (128 bits for example), which is stored in a memory area. The zone in question is initialized during the design of the radio transmitter and the receiver. Once you press a button on the remote control, a pseudo-generator number using the internal code of the device is used by the remote control. This is how a random sequential code is generated. The generated code is transmitted via radio wave to objects in the vicinity. In case a nearby garage receives a code, it will use the same pseudo-generator number to validate that the code obtained is the same as the code itself generated.
 
The difference of a rotating code remote control therefore lies in the secret code stored in the memory area of the device but also in the algorithm that generates the code.
