Subaru  is the automotive manufacturing division of Japanese transportation conglomerate Subaru Corporation (formerly known as Fuji Heavy Industries) which is the twenty-second largest automalker by production worldwide in 2012.

Subaru cars are known for their use of a boxer engine layout in most vehicles above 1500 cc. The Symmetrical All Wheel Drive drive-train layout was introduced in 1972. The flat/boxer engine and all-wheel-drive became standard equipment for mid-size and smaller cars in most international markets by 1996, and is now standard in most North American market Subaru vehicles.

Subaru Research and Development (SRD) was developed in 1989 due to a joint venture between Isuzu and Subaru of America in Indiana.  SRD’s main objective is to research the American consumer preferences relative to car designs and trends in addition to evaluating emissions systems and testing cars.
SRD has four (4) offices of operation with Headquarters being located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which houses engineering departments, Body and Evaluation, HMI, Powertrain and Emission, along with Human Resources and Business Planning. Cypress, California engineering departments include Certifications, Powertrain and Emissions in addition to Human Resources and Business Planning.  Tustin, California engineering departments include Product Planning and Design in addition to Business Planning.  Lafayette, Indiana is where the Design Engineers are housed which include (Body, Chassis, Exterior, Interior and Power Unit).
