Job Summary:

The Engineer-In-Training (EIT) position applies technology and engineering principles to the planning, functional design, operation, and management of transportation facilities in order to provide for the safe, efficient, and economical movement of people and goods. Will rotate during EIT program through different technical areas including construction, project management and design. Most assignments require the ability to work outside in the field exposed to weather conditions.

This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Job Duties:

Perform engineering duties and tasks related to project development, construction and operations with oversight from supervisors.

Research, review, and design plans and information. Perform calculations and write reports related to assigned project(s).

Analyze data related to materials, safety, construction parameters, and specifications.

Inspect contractor work to ensure adherence to design & approved plan specifications.

Document preparation and processing for reimbursement and compliance.

Utilize computer software and modeling packages to perform the assigned task(s)/project(s).

Other duties as assigned as related to the position.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge:
• Project design process, plan preparation, and fundamental design concepts for roadways, bridges, and traffic.
• Project development process including funding, scoping and scheduling.
• Construction means, methods, standards, and specifications.
• Construction materials and testing as they pertain to transportation projects.
• Design and administration of construction contracts.
• Engineering related to transportation systems and maintenance operations.

Skill:
• Use of engineering and design software.
• Development and construction of transportation projects.
• Computer applications; including Google Suite and Microsoft Office.

Ability:
• Prepare design and construction cost estimates for projects.
• Develop productive working relationships with internal staff and external customers.
• Give and receive feedback in a professional manner.

Selective Preference(s):

Bachelor's Degree or higher in Civil Engineering, or a closely related field.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).

Successfully pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam before the completion of the 2 year EIT program.

All newly hired State employees are subject to and must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).
