Job Summary (includes but is not limited to the following, other duties may be assigned)
This position supports ongoing programs that facilitate and monitor the status of activities that prevent and/or minimize the consequences of fire, mechanical breakdown and natural hazard risks. This position will also lead the claims process for the property insurance program.
Job Responsibilities
Manage third party property insurance inspections at Calpine’s natural gas-fired and geothermal energy centers, including battery energy storage sites. Schedule and attend loss control site visits with all third-party inspectors. Review all loss control reports to ensure accuracy with site visits. Work with Calpine operations/engineering/construction personnel to respond to insurer recommendations. Follow up with power plant management as needed until completion of recommendation is obtained either via implementation of recommendation, describing alternative action or rationale for not implementing recommendation has been communicated to the appropriate third parties.Provide various internal personnel including insurance department as well as operations/engineering/construction personnel with reports and analysis on recommendations and trends. Develop corporate wide recommendation responses to third party loss control firm and/or insurers as needed. As needed, prepare underwriting information reports for submittal to third party insurers in respect of facility construction, common and special hazards, fire protection and management risk control programs for property, boiler and machinery, liability and course of construction insurance risks. Participate on road shows with Corporate Insurance team as needed.Support the engineering group and plant management with third party pressure vessel jurisdictional programs at operational and construction projects.Interact with third party service provider, insurance and operations personnel on loss control related issues until resolved.Work with engineering and construction on development for fire protection and loss control specifications for new projects.Provide plant personnel with fire protection code interpretations, and testing recommendations consistent with nationally recognized codes and standards.Develop and maintain technical knowledge of the major equipment in the Calpine fleet (e.g., combustion turbine generators, steam turbine generators, transformers and electrical apparatus, HRSGs). Ensures professional competence and keeps abreast of changes within the industry by tracking equipment TILs, service bulletins and reviewing industry publications.Acts as subject matter expert on loss control and prevention. Work with operations, construction, engineering and other departments to provide guidance and expertise on loss control prevention and mitigation.Manage property (including cargo) and business interruption claims for the company. Engage third party loss adjusters and coordinate all activities with loss adjuster and plant on each claim until all work and claim documentation is complete. Other duties as requested.
Job Requirements
Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an accredited institution required.Professional Engineer (P.E.) designation preferred (Mechanical ideal)Ability to travel significantly throughout the year (approximately 25-30%)Strong oral and written communication skillsProficient in Microsoft software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, etc.)Typically requires minimum of 10+ years in area of specialization.5 years Power Industry experience required5 years Property loss control experience required5 years’ experience working in the Power Generation segment of the property insurance market. Experience with property and business interruption claims and/or underwriting desired.
