Job Description:

Summary Employee in this position is responsible for traffic engineering in Island County.Position is open until filled. Job Duties Administer traffic volume, speed zone, traffic signing and signalization, road channelization, pavement marking, and other related traffic studies.  Prepare commensurate summary reports for review by higher authority.Manage transportation improvement projects from concept to design to construction.Review and investigate public complaints relating to traffic problems.  Prepare investigation report with recommended corrective action.  Prepare design to correct problem if required.Review inspection reports of roadside safety devices, including guardrails and barricades.  Recommend proper maintenance and repair activity and maintain record of action taken.Inspection of transportation improvement project construction to ensure compliance to plans and specifications.Maintain record of traffic accident reports, received from enforcement agencies, which occurred in Island County. Develop options in response to safety grant opportunities and prepare grant applications.Coordinate regional projects with local cities and towns and Washington State Department of Transportation.Perform other tasks as directed.  Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of engineering principles and practices, and the material and equipment involved in the area of specialization of the position.Knowledge and practical application and use of MSDOS-based computers and the following software: Microsoft Office, AUTOCAD, and ArcGIS, as applied to the area of specialization of the position.Knowledge of mathematics and trigonometry.  Ability to prepare and interpret engineering plans and specifications.Some knowledge of the current literature, state standards, trends, and developments in the area of this position.Ability to adapt approved engineering methods and standards to the planning, design, and construction of a variety of public works projects.Capability to perform technical research work and to give reliable advice on difficult engineering problems.Communicate effectively, both orally and written, with others for purposes of gathering and relaying information.Experience in the use and care of instruments and equipment employed.   Education, Experience & Certifications Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering in an accredited college or university and a major course in Traffic Engineering required.Valid Washington State Drivers License.Island County is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
