The Challenge
We are hiring an Engineering Technician Apprentice to join our Division 8 engineering team. In this 2-year apprenticeship, you will gain 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, and complete your Associate's degree at a community college in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey/Geomatics Technology, or a related major. Upon completion, you will receive a Journey-worker card issued by the US Department of Labor. This apprenticeship comes with full pay and benefits from day 1, and includes a permanent role upon completion with NCDOT!
In this apprenticeship, you will learn how to:
Perform technical engineering work supporting senior engineering technicians and engineers in construction inspection, surveying, materials sampling, testing, erosion control, and construction traffic control.Perform a variety of standardized and non-standardized tests and assignments compiling, analyzing, computing, editing, and processing field data.Perform engineering calculations and computations.Work inside and outside.

Analytical thinking skills.A commitment to academic success.Strong written and verbal communication skills.Leadership potential.Interest in transportation construction and engineering, such as transportation and environmental planning, design, construction, engineering, and maintenance.Basic computer skills using laptops, iPads, and software.Communications skills to effectively use verbal and nonverbal skills to express routine or simple technical and program concepts and facts in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner.Ability to communicate with staff to ensure tasks are completed correctly and on time. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.Ability to safely perform manual tasks using a bush axe and other tools on steep and rough terrains.Strength and agility to carry testing equipment over rough and steep terrain.Strength to lift and carry at least 50 pounds.Ability to safely work high above the ground, be proficient in record keeping, and use engineering testing equipment. Ability to work effectively in areas with high traffic, work at heights over water or traffic, and agility to climb on bridge substructures and superstructures. Safety toe shoes.
Education & Experience
High School/GED Diploma, andCurrently studying for an Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey/Geomatics Technology, or a related field.
